Science Runs Deep

Exploring Hawaiʻi’s Deep Reefs.

Protecting Their Future.

Research, exploration, and community-led conservation for the ecosystems hidden below recreational diving depths.

Who We Are

Exploration. Research. Conservation. Connection.

TARE (Technical Aquatic Research and Exploration) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Hawai‘i, but not limited by it. We study and protect deep reef ecosystems, beginning in West Hawai‘i and extending wherever exploration leads.

We bring together scientists, divers, and community members to advance marine research, promote conservation, and ensure the sustainable use of ocean resources.

Rooted in Hawai‘i yet unbound by geography, our work merges cutting-edge exploration with community collaboration to uncover and protect the hidden stories of our ocean.

We’re building a future where science runs deep—and so does impact.

What We Do

Reef Monitoring & Research

We track the health of deep reef ecosystems using advanced techniques like Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry and technical diving. By documenting coral growth, habitat complexity, and fish populations, we build a clear picture of how these ecosystems are changing.

Biodiversity & Data Collection

Through fish cataloging, species identification, and environmental sampling, we expand biodiversity records and detect population trends that help us understand reef resilience.

Education & Engagement

We translate science into stories—sharing results through outreach, immersive learning experiences, and collaborations that inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.

Conservation In Action

Our research doesn’t stay on the shelf. We work directly with local communities to shape policies and practices that protect reefs, ensuring these ecosystems thrive for future generations.

Support the Mission

Your donation fuels critical research, supports conservation efforts, and helps protect Hawaiʻi’s deep reef ecosystems for generations to come. Every gift—no matter the size—goes directly to our 501(c)(3) to support fieldwork, community outreach, and the science that drives lasting impact.
